From our bar to yours, we bring you a traditional hot spiced cider to enjoy over the holidays. We’ve included spices from our favorite purveyor, Spice Trekkers, one of the world’s top spice makers. You can purchase spices directly from Spice Trekkers or you can always substitute with the spices you have in your kitchen. This is a classic that the whole family can enjoy (just make sure to make a kid-friendly batch)!
- 1 gal Michigan Cider
- 90 Cloves (80 for Garnish)
- 20 Juniper Berries
- 1 pod Star Anise
- 2 Cinnamon sticks
- Zest of 1 Lemon
- Diplomatico Reserva Rum or any other aged rum
Fill a medium sized pot with the cider and spices. Bring to a boil then turn down to simmer. Let cider simmer for 1 hour. If serving immediately, filter out the spices and put into a thermal serving dispenser. If you have the time, we suggest leaving the spices in the cider and refrigerating it overnight. Strain the spices out the next day and heat before serving. For the garnish, slice an apple and poke 4 cloves through the slice then add to mug. Add 1.5oz of the aged rum to a mug and top with spiced cider. Serves 20-25.
